LED Step Lighting Refurbishment at Theater Heidelberg
The original step lighting in the stalls was fully encapsulated and difficult to access when faults occurred. We exposed the connections and rebuilt approximately 280 metres of lighting, integrating it into the existing structure while improving access for future maintenance.
A lighting fault should not mean another complete refurbishment.
The original step lighting was completely encapsulated in epoxy resin. The luminaires and connections were therefore very difficult to access, creating serious problems when repairs became necessary.
The connection cables were also embedded in the existing structure. Simply replacing the luminaires was not enough. First, the existing installation had to be opened, cables exposed and the parquet steps prepared for a new solution that would be easier to maintain.
From an epoxy-encapsulated system to serviceable LED step lighting.
The difference is about more than the appearance of the light. What matters is whether the installation remains accessible during future operation.
Before
After
Before replacing anything, the technology had to be made accessible.
The connection cables were embedded in the original construction. Before installing the new step lighting, these cables had to be exposed carefully and selected sections of parquet opened.
In refurbishment projects, this stage determines whether existing materials can be retained and how neatly the new solution can be integrated.
Four interventions, one clear objective: future access.
This was not merely a cosmetic replacement. The refurbishment was planned around the original structure and future servicing requirements.
The encapsulated areas were assessed and opened wherever access to the installed equipment was necessary.
Embedded connection cables were made accessible and prepared for the replacement installation.
The existing step areas were machined and prepared to accommodate the new LED step lighting.
The new lighting was integrated into the existing parquet so that future maintenance and replacement would be easier.
The technology must remain accessible for the next service visit.
A fully encapsulated installation may initially appear robust. But when light sources or connections cannot be reached, a simple repair can become a building project.
From opening the original installation to the finished light line.
The photographs illustrate why these projects are about more than the luminaire itself: careful work within the existing construction is essential.

New light lines within the existing structure, with better maintenance access.
Approximately 280 metres of step lighting were integrated into the existing parquet and commissioned in 2019. Compared with the fully encapsulated original installation, the new system is substantially easier to access and maintain.
For similar theatre, auditorium and refurbishment projects, an integratedrecessed step-lighting solutioncan be appropriate where discreet light lines and subsequent maintenance access are both important.
Refurbishing existing step lighting
Not every existing system needs to be opened or replaced in the same way. The decisive factors are the construction, cable routes and on-site accessibility.
What was the main challenge at Theater Heidelberg?
The original step lighting was fully encapsulated in epoxy resin, with connection cables embedded in the existing structure. Sections had to be opened and the cables exposed carefully before reconstruction.
How much lighting was refurbished?
Approximately 280 metres of step lighting in the stalls were refurbished. The new installation was commissioned in 2019.
Why is serviceability important for step lighting?
If luminaires and connections are permanently encapsulated and inaccessible, a later fault may require significant building work. A serviceable installation simplifies maintenance and targeted replacement.
Can existing step lighting generally be retrofitted or refurbished?
Often, yes. Whether existing cables, mounting positions or parts of the structure can be reused depends on the actual installation and must be assessed on site.
A photo or two sentences are enough for an initial assessment.
